just finished reading..

what i'm reading now

      in my library

I had started to write about the books I was reading within my old journal, but the inactivity of my webpages led me to lose some of my journal links. I recently signed up to join a book club online and have been writing recommendations, which gave me the idea to put a separate section on the books in my library here again.

I am not pretending to be a book critic because I am not writing critiques. I am simply someone who enjoys a good read and has a wide range of reading interests which I hope can help others in their book choices. I have found other people's views on the literature they have read very helpful in steering my own reading, and it's more of a personal intellectual exercise for me.

I had tried to accumulate books back in the Philippines and had been thrilled with the many sales at National Bookstores which saw nondescript titles and authors going on sale for as cheap as the equivalent of a dollar or less. When I moved to New York in 2000, it was with a heavy heart that I gave away the books in my small collection because they were just too cumbersome to bring, given the weight and the bulk of the books. My bestfriend Fe always told me that I can just start a new collection once I got settled here in the US. It has been four years since I started "collecting" books again, and I am slowly building a collection.

Only in America will you get the chance to have a book signed by THE Tom Clancy, one of my favorite and revered authors. Only here have I had the chance to sit in the audience as the Naked Chef, Jamie Kennedy, gave us a sampling of his wit and humor and wit in cooking.

I am trying to acquire some of the books I left behind and gave away, or those that I have lost in the "borrower's cycle" -- books that never found their way back to me as I lost track who had which of my books. And with Angelo now in my life, I am finally seriously purchasing children's books, a collection I had wanted to start way, way back but which kept getting depleted as I kept sending my books to my niece in Manila, Julia Audrey, now 3.

      Here's to a good read!
